Patient Preparation Guidelines

  1. The doctor may arrange tests that the patient needs to have to help assess the case. These may include blood tests, an electrocardiogram (ECG), an exercise test.
  2. The patient may be admitted the day before the procedure, but most people are admitted the same morning. Patient may be asked not to have anything to eat or drink for six to eight hours prior to the procedure. Medications, allergies and any other issues must be discussed with the doctor prior to the examination.
  3. When admitted, a doctor will explain the procedure to the patient, give a brief physical examination, and answer any questions that the patient and/or his/her family may have. The patient and/or immediate family member will be asked to sign a form consenting to the test.
  4. The patient will be asked to remove any worn jewelry and put on a hospital gown. He/she will be shaved in the area where the catheter will be inserted. Sometimes a sedative will be given about an hour before the test to help the patient relax.
  5. Cathlab procedures include other tests that require Fluoroscopic examination of peripheral, abdominal, etc. arteries and veins both for Diagnostic and Interventional purposes
