Pain was officially declared "The Fifth Vital Sign."Henceforth, the evaluation of pain became a requirement of proper patient care as important and basic as the assessment and management of temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate.
5th Vital sign emphasizes its significance in patient and assessment and care. It encourages healthcare providers to routinely evaluate and manage pain.
5th Vital sign monitoring is always done by the Pain Nurse-on-duty and is rendered for 3 days (or as required by the Attending Anesthesiologist/ Pain Specialists). It is usually done by thorough pain assessment using the approved Pain Measurement tools like Visual Analogue Score (VAS)/ Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Critical Care Pain Observation Tool (CCPOT), Wong and Baker, Faces, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability (FLACC) and Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS).
