The Asian Hospital and Medical Center (AHMC) was founded in 2002. In its early years, Adult Neurology section functioned under the Department of Internal Medicine while Neurosurgery and Pediatric Neurology were under the departments of Surgery and Pediatrics, respectively. In 2005, the Department of Neurosciences of AHMC was established, combing the three sections; Adult Neurology, Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery. The three sections were combined as one department to allow for adaptive shifts to enhance our ability to succeed in providing diverse neurologic care to our community.

It was initially chaired by Dr. Ester S. Bitanga. Upon her retirement, Dr. Eusebio Debuque took the reins of steering the department. In 2014, Dr. Madeleine Sosa was appointed as department chair for the last 6 years ushering in the establishment of the Asian Brain Institute (ABI) with Dr. Ana Marie Javelosa at the forefront as the program director. Under the current set-up, the creation of the different protocols for the Acute Stroke Unit and Neurological Intensive Care Unit (Neuro-ICU) were proposed and adhered to.

It was also during these fruitful years that the Department took steps in committing to ensure continuing medical education by sponsoring post graduate courses and lay fora. To date, the Department has already sponsored five post graduate courses.

Currently, the department is chaired by Dr. Madeleine Grace M. Sosa while the heads of the sections of Adult Neurology, Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery are Dr. Vincent Macalintal, Dr. Bernadette Terencio and Dr. Francis Santiago, respectively. Dr. Arman Oronce was appointed as the Program Director for Residency Training, who together with the training committee drafted the first version of the training manual in the outcome-based education (OBE format as prescribed by the Commission on Higher Education. The residency training program in adult neurology as approved by the Adult Neurology Specialty Board (ANS) last December 2021. The residents admitted to the program during its first year were Drs. Miriam Angeline Antonio and Keith Andrew Ablona while Dr. Louise Santos was accepted into the program three months later.

As a vastly developing department, we continue to adapt and mobilize our linkages and organization which is characterized by strong leadership, competent and committed staff, an effective structure, and a supportive milieu. Looking ahead as we further evolve, our team will continue providing world-class facilities and cutting-edge technology in a manner that is rational and appropriate and ultimately achieves profitability and growth through responsible and sustainable fiscal management, accompanied by efficient and productive operations.
