INTRODUCTION

Many children have problems with walking due to specific musculoskeletal conditions. Gait problems refer to abnormalities in the way a person walks, which can affect their mobility, balance, and overall quality of life.

COMMON CONDITIONS

  • TOE WALKING
Toe walking is a gait abnormality where a person walks on their toes instead of their feet flat on the ground. It is common in young children who are learning to walk but can be a sign of other underlying conditions.
  • IN-TOEING
This condition is also known as “Pigeon-toeing”. It is a gait problem where the feet are pointed inwards when walking. It can affect one or both sides. It can be caused by abnormalities in bone alignment.
  • OUT-TOEING
This condition is also known as “Duck Toeing”. It is a gait problem where the feet are pointed outwards when walking. It is not as common as in-toeing It can affect one or both sides.
  • GENU VARUM (BOW LEGS)
Bow legs are a condition where the knees are spaced widely apart when standing with the feet together, causing the legs to curve outward like a bow. It is common in infants and toddlers as their bones develop, but it usually corrects itself as they grow older. It might also be a sign of other underlying orthopedic or metabolic conditions.
  • GENU VALGUM (KNOCK KNEES)
Knock knees are a condition where the knees angle inward when standing with the feet together, causing the legs to curve inward. It is common in infants and toddlers as their bones develop, but it usually corrects itself as they grow older. It might also be a sign of other underlying orthopedic or metabolic conditions.

MANAGEMENT:
Gait problems can impact an individual’s ability to walk comfortably and efficiently. Many cases can be effectively managed with appropriate interventions such as stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices, or, in some cases, surgical correction.

If you or someone you know is experiencing gait abnormalities, it is important to consult with our Pediatric Orthopedic specialists for proper evaluation and management.
