The Health Research Office held its Annual Asian Hospital and Medical Center Research Contest 2023 on November 17, 2023 at Training Room 1, 6th Floor, Tower 2. The objectives of the contest were: (1) to disseminate research findings and case report outputs of medical trainees, (2) gain insights from the healthcare community, and (3) encourage active participation of healthcare professionals in the conduct of research in the hospital.  Dr. Beaver R. Tamesis, President and Chief Executive Officer, delivered his welcome remarks,  while Dr. Charles Y. Yu, Head of Research Program delivered his opening remarks to start the program.

The contest was divided into three (3) categories: (1) Case Report, (2) Descriptive Research Paper, and (3) Analytic Research Paper.  The case report paper and research manuscripts of the contestants were pre-graded prior to the oral presentation on November 17, 2023.  Contestants who have garnered the top 3 highest scores were declared the winners for each category. 

Case Report Category

There were 11 medical trainees who presented their case reports during the event. The first place was awarded to Dr. Mark David E. Stehmeier from the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. The second place was awarded to Dr. Hazel F. Casimiro of the Adult Cardiology Fellowship Training Program, and the third place was awarded to Dr. Al-Jazzer M. Angas of the Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Training Program.

The panel of judges for the case report category are: (1) Dr. Maria Corazon H. Cabuquit from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, (2) Dr. Eden Ferrer-Lasala from the Department of Emergency Medicine, and (3) Dr. Angelito D. Magno from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Magno, the Chair of Judges, announced and awarded the winners after the awarding of certificates to all the presenters. The winners received Php 10,000.00, Php 7,000.00, and Php 5,000.00 for first place, second place, and third place, respectively. 

Descriptive Research Category

There were five (5) medical trainees who presented in the descriptive category. Dr. Rachelle Anne M. Cruz and Dr. Wendell A. Tulay were tied in first place, and the second place was awarded to Dr. Juan Miguel E. Peña. All winners were from the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. 

The panel of judges for this category are: (1) Dr. Valerie T. Guinto from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, (2) Dr. Jose Alvin P. Mojica from the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, and (3) Dr. Johanna Patricia A. Cañal from the Department of Radiology. 

Analytic Research Category

There were seven (7) medical trainees who presented in the analytic research category. The first place was awarded to Dr. Nina Rebecca Ramos-Kalaw from the Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Training Program. The second place was awarded to Dr. Karla Patricia C. Alas of the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program, and the third place was awarded to Dr. Ma. Theresa L. Lejarde from the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. 

The panel of judges for this category are: (1) Professor Cynthia P. Cordero from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine – Department of Clinical Epidemiology, (2) Dr. Jose Alvin P. Mojica from the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, and (3) Dr. Johanna Patricia A. Cañal from the Department of Radiology.

Dr. Cañal, the Chair of Judges, announced the winners of the Descriptive and Analytic Categories after the awarding of certificates to all presenters. The winners in the descriptive category received Php 20,000.00 and Php 15,000.00 for first place and second place, respectively.  Tied winners received the full amount of prize without split. The winners in the analytic category received Php 25,000.00, Php 20,000.00, and 15,000.00 for first place, second place, and third place, respectively.
