Imagine a young father — the breadwinner of his family — suddenly going blind after an accident. Overnight, he loses his ability to work and provide for his loved ones.
Imagine a child who goes blind from measles or a severe eye infection, and whose parents are told:
“There is a way to restore your child’s vision, but we cannot say when that chance will come.”
Imagine a grandparent who just had cataract surgery to see clearly again, only to develop a complication that leaves them blind — and being told they must wait indefinitely for treatment.
For many years, this was the reality for Filipinos living with corneal blindness. Not because our surgeons lacked skill, nor because we lacked modern facilities — but because there was a severe shortage of donor corneal tissue in the Philippines.
A New Hope for Patients
At Asian Hospital and Medical Center’s Corneal Transplant Center, we are changing this reality.
Our center combines:
• World-class ophthalmologists trained in advanced corneal surgery
• State-of-the-art surgical techniques to restore sight safely and effectively
• Improved access to donor corneas so patients no longer wait indefinitely
Each successful transplant means more than just vision restored — it means a child can return to school, a parent can go back to work, and a grandparent can once again see their loved ones.
Understanding Corneal Blindness
Corneal disease is the 4th leading cause of blindness worldwide and can strike anyone — children, working adults, or seniors.
Common causes include:
• Severe infections from injury, improper contact lens use, or viruses
• Trauma from accidents or chemical exposure
• Genetic conditions like keratoconus
• Complications after eye surgery
• Congenital corneal opacities in newborns
Because the cornea must be clear and properly shaped for vision, any damage can result in severe visual impairment — or complete blindness. And to this day, only a cornea from another human donor can replace a damaged cornea.
Raising awareness on corneal donation to address the shortage of transplantable tissue
We are here to give hope back to patients and families who have been told to wait — sometimes for years — for their chance to see again.
