Pulmonary Therapeutics Center and Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) Clinic is a specialized service under the Asian Institute of Respirology (AIR) that focuses on providing mechanical breathing support without the use of invasive tubes or tracheostomies. It is designed to solve the challenges of chronic respiratory failure by utilizing mask-based interfaces (such as CPAP or BiPAP) to unload overworked respiratory muscles, improve oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange, and prevent the need for hospitalization.

The center is equipped with advanced non-invasive ventilatory support systems, including modern CPAP and BiPAP devices, high-flow oxygen delivery systems, and monitoring equipment for continuous assessment of respiratory status and treatment response. It utilizes a variety of NIV interfaces such as nasal masks, oronasal (full-face) masks, nasal pillows, and total face masks, allowing individualized fitting based on patient comfort, tolerance, and clinical requirement.

This service is supervised by a multidisciplinary team of pulmonologists and respiratory therapists trained in titration, monitoring, and long-term management of non-invasive ventilation. It also provides patient education, mask fitting optimization, adherence monitoring, and follow-up care to ensure effective therapy, improve quality of life, and reduce disease progression and hospital readmissions in patients with chronic respiratory disorders.

Core Function and Benefits

The clinic provides a structured environment for patients who require long-term assistance with their breathing due to conditions such as:

  • Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome: Where excessive weight hinders deep breathing.
  • Neuromuscular Disorders: Including ALS or muscular dystrophy, where breathing muscles weaken.
  • Severe COPD: Managing hypercapnia (high CO2 levels) that persists despite standard medication.
  • Chest Wall Deformities: Such as severe kyphoscoliosis that restricts lung expansion.
  • OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) A sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of partial or complete upper airway obstruction during sleep, resulting in intermittent hypoxemia, fragmented sleep, and reduced sleep quality.
  • Obesity A chronic medical condition characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat that may impair health, typically defined by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher.
  • Palliative and Breathing Support at Home specialized home-based care service focused on providing comfort-oriented medical management and respiratory support for patients with advanced, chronic, or life-limiting illnesses.
