Faster Infection Detection Means Faster Treatment: Asian Hospital Introduces the First BioFire® SpotFire® System in the Philippines

Home | Health Articles | Faster Infection Detection Means Faster Treatment: Asian Hospital Introduces the First BioFire® SpotFire® System in the Philippines

Asian Hospital and Medical Center continues to raise the standard of healthcare by introducing the first BioFire® SpotFire® system in the Philippines. To mark this milestone, the hospital held a scientific forum on July 2, 2026, at Acacia Hotel Alabang, bringing together doctors, laboratory professionals, and healthcare workers to learn how this innovative technology can help improve patient care.

The event highlighted how rapid diagnostic testing allows doctors to identify the cause of an infection much faster than traditional laboratory tests. With quicker and more accurate results, patients can receive the right treatment sooner, avoid unnecessary medications, and have a better chance of recovery.

Faster Detection Can Save Lives

The BioFire® SpotFire® system is an advanced diagnostic platform that can detect multiple bacteria and viruses from a single patient sample in a short amount of time. This helps doctors quickly identify what's causing an infection and decide on the most appropriate treatment without waiting days for laboratory results.

Rapid infection detection is especially important for patients with conditions where every hour counts, such as:

  • Sepsis (a life-threatening infection that spreads through the bloodstream)
  • Severe pneumonia or other serious lung infections
  • Persistent high fever with an unknown cause
  • Serious sore throat or respiratory infections
  • Patients with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing cancer treatment or organ transplant recipients
  • Patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or those who are critically ill

By identifying the cause of an infection earlier, doctors can start the right treatment sooner, helping reduce complications, shorten hospital stays, and improve patient outcomes.

Learning from Experts

The forum featured three educational sessions led by experts in infection control, medical affairs, and molecular pathology.

Dr. Marion Priscilla Kwek, Infection Control Specialist, discussed how rapid syndromic testing can help doctors diagnose bloodstream infections and sepsis earlier, allowing life-saving treatment to begin as soon as possible.

Dr. Helen Dy-Eduvas, ASEAN Medical Affairs Associate at bioMérieux, shared how rapid multiplex testing can accurately identify the cause of sore throat and respiratory infections, helping doctors prescribe the right treatment while avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use.

Dr. Karen Damian, Molecular Pathology Laboratory Head, explained how these rapid diagnostic tests can be integrated into laboratory workflows, allowing healthcare teams to deliver results more efficiently and support faster clinical decision-making.

Committed to Better Patient Care Through Innovation

In collaboration with bioMérieux, the scientific forum reflects Asian Hospital's commitment to bringing the latest medical innovations to the Philippines. By investing in advanced diagnostic technology and continuously educating healthcare professionals, the hospital is helping ensure that patients receive faster diagnoses, more accurate treatments, and better overall care.

As the first hospital in the Philippines to introduce the BioFire® SpotFire® system, Asian Hospital continues to lead in delivering innovative, patient-centered healthcare and making world-class diagnostic technology more accessible to Filipinos.
