What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is a condition where cells in the prostate gland—a small, walnut-sized organ found only in men—begin to grow uncontrollably. The prostate gland is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum, and its primary job is to produce seminal fluid, which nourishes and transports sperm.

Because the prostate is located near the urinary tract, prostate cancer can often affect a man’s ability to urinate as the tumor grows and puts pressure on the urethra.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Prostate Cancer?

It is important to note that prostate cancer often shows no symptoms in its early stages. Many men are only alerted to the condition through routine screening. As the cancer advances, potential symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty urinating or a weak urine stream.

  • Increased frequency of urination, especially at night.

  • Blood in the urine or semen.

  • Erectile dysfunction.

  • Discomfort or pain in the pelvic area.

Note: These symptoms can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions, such as an enlarged prostate (BPH). Only a medical professional can provide a diagnosis.

Diagnosis and Screening

Because early-stage prostate cancer often presents no symptoms, routine screening is vital for early detection. The standard diagnostic path usually includes:

  • PSA Test: A simple blood test that measures Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) levels.

  • Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): A physical exam where a doctor checks the prostate for abnormalities.

  • Biopsy: If screening results are abnormal, a biopsy—where a small sample of prostate tissue is collected for testing—is the definitive way to confirm a diagnosis.

How Is Prostate Cancer Treated?

Treatment plans are highly personalized depending on the stage of the cancer, the patient's age, and overall health. Modern treatment modalities—many of which are available at specialized facilities like the Asian Cancer Institute—include:

  • Active Surveillance: For slow-growing, low-risk cancers, doctors may recommend monitoring the condition closely rather than immediate intervention.

  • Surgical Oncology: Procedures such as prostatectomy (removal of the prostate) to surgically eliminate the cancer.

  • Radiation Therapy: High-energy beams (including precision techniques like Brachytherapy or CyberKnife) are used to target and kill cancer cells.

  • Hormone Therapy: Medications designed to stop the body from producing testosterone, which can fuel the growth of prostate cancer cells.
