Soft Tissue Tumors
Soft tissue tumors are a varied group of benign and malignant growth. It comprises <4% of all tumors among adult patients and 7-10% in pediatric patients. It is important to note that 99% of soft tissue tumors are benign and the incidence of malignant soft tissue tumor is 4-5x more common than that of a malignant bone tumor.
Early recognition and consultation with a competent specialist are very important to accurately and timely diagnose benign from malignant tumors. Laboratory and ancillary procedures can be requested such as blood examination, ultrasound, radiographs, CT scan, and dedicated MRI, among others. After a thorough work-up, a biopsy can then be planned to establish the diagnosis. Management centers on a multidisciplinary approach to properly and holistically address the problem.
Presently, developments in the field of pathology, radiology, medical oncology, and surgery have greatly improved outcome and prognosis for patients with soft tissue tumors especially the malignant variant.
