Under the Ancillary Services is the Department of Radiology that is committed to providing accurate and quality diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology services to all patients. It is composed of a group of professionals who are dedicated to delivering timely and efficient radiology services with compassion. Keeping AHMC’s core values to heart, the Department of Radiology strives to become the leader in diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology in the Asia Pacific.

AHMC’s Department of Radiology is currently divided into five sections, which are: General Radiology, Computed Tomography Scan (CT Scan), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasound (UTZ) and Interventional Radiology (IR).

GENERAL RADIOLOGY

Radiology is a branch of medicine that uses radiation to diagnose and treat specific health conditions. At AHMC, the General Radiology unit offers a series of X-ray based services, which include:

  • Radiography – The oldest and most common type of diagnostic imaging test, radiography uses X-rays to produce images of the body’s internal organs, thereby allowing for the detection of injuries and infections in bones, tissues and blood vessels.

AHMC’s General Radiology unit is open 24/7 to provide diagnostic imaging tests to inpatients and emergency patients. Radiology Outpatient services are available from Monday to Saturday (7:00am – 7:00pm) and Sunday (7:00am – 5:00pm).
  • Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) – This X-ray test is done to measure bone density and detect bone loss, which is a symptom of osteoporosis. This is done by measuring the amounts of calcium and minerals in the bone.

BMD services at the Department of Radiology are available from Monday to Saturday (8:00am – 4:00pm) and Sunday (7:00am – 3:00pm).

  • Fluoroscopy and C-Arm Mobile X-ray – AHMC’s Department of Radiology is equipped with two C-arm mobile X-ray machines and one fluoroscopy machine for diagnostic fluoroscopic imaging. Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique that captures still and moving X-ray images in real time to determine any structural or functional problem in the internal organs. Using radiocontrast agents like barium may also be recommended to get a clearer image of certain tissues and organs.

COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY SCAN (CT Scan)

A computed tomography scan (CT scan) is a diagnostic imaging test that uses a computer and a series of X-ray images to create a cross-sectional image (slice) of the body’s tissues and organs. It provides clearer and more detailed images than a standard X-ray. AHMC is equipped with a 64-slice CT scanner that produces 64 high-resolution slices per rotation, ensuring that the captured images are accurate and detailed. A CT scan be done on any part of the body.

Other services available at the CT Scan unit are:

  • Angiogram, which captures images of the heart’s blood vessels
  • Virtual colonoscopy, which provides a non-invasive way to detect polyps, tumors and other abnormalities in the large intestine.
  • Stonogram, which is used to detect stones in the bladder and kidneys

The CT Scan unit is open 24/7 for inpatients and emergency patients. For outpatients, services are available from Monday to Saturday (7:00am – 7:00pm) and Sunday (8:00am – 5:00pm). Procedures using contrast enhancement are on an appointment basis.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic imaging test that uses strong magnetic and radio waves to produce detailed, cross-sectional images of the internal organs. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI does not use any form of radiation. Similar to a CT-scan, however, an MRI can also be done on any part of the body, specifically the brain, spine, muscles and bones.

AHMC’s Department of Radiology also offers MRI procedures to conduct angiograms to better check the health of the blood vessels and diagnose coronary artery diseases.

The MRI unit is open 24/7 for inpatients and emergency patients. Services are available from Monday to Saturday (7:00am – 7:00pm) and Sunday (8:00am – 5:00pm) for outpatients. Procedures using contrast enhancement are on an appointment basis.

ULTRASOUND

A medical ultrasound is an imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create live, cross-sectional images of the inside of the body. It is commonly done to check the development of a fetus during pregnancy, but it is also used to detect abnormalities in the internal organs and other soft tissues. Similar to an MRI, an ultrasound does not use any form of radiation.

Ultrasound services provided by AHMC’s Department of Radiology include gynecological and obstetrical, breast, uterus, chest, cranial and musculoskeletal ultrasounds. A Doppler ultrasound is also available to examine blood flow through the blood vessels.

The Ultrasound unit is open from Monday to Saturday (7:00am – 7:00pm) and Sunday (8:00am – 5:00pm). Emergency patients requiring ultrasound procedures beyond operating hours will be attended to by the on-call duty.

INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY

Interventional radiology refers to imaging procedures, including fluoroscopic X-ray, CT scan and ultrasound, which are performed during minimally invasive procedures where image guidance is necessary. It is usually done to guide needles and catheters to treatment sites, such as when placing stents or taking biopsies. At AHMC, Interventional Radiology services are divided into two sections: vascular intervention, which involves the heart; and non-vascular intervention, which focuses on the other parts of the body.

Angiograms, ultrasound or CT scan guided biopsies are done on an appointment basis with the interventional radiologist tasked to do the procedure.

The Main Radiology Department is located at the upper ground floor of Tower 1.
