The
Department of Ophthalmology is dedicated to the preservation
of vision and prevention of blindness through patient care,
research, and education. It has one of the largest staff
in Asian Hospital and Medical Center and one of the strongest
sub-specialty groups among Metro Manila hospitals. Unique
to the department is its Laser Room (Eye Diagnostic and
Laser Unit) that features state-of-the-art equipment.
Under
the Department of Ophthalmology is the Eye Laser and Diagnostic
Unit, which is staffed by highly trained experts in laser
vision and intraocular surgery. It offers the following
services:
A-scan/biometry
An ultrasonic modality used that determines intraocular
lens power for implantation in cataract surgery
Perimetry
Also called visual field test, perimetry measures an individual’s
visual field (range of vision) through the detection of
the presence of test targets on a defined background. The
test is used for investigating and quantifying visual field
damage in disease states such as glaucoma and neuroophthalmologic
disorders. The patient is asked to keep his/her gaze fixed
on test objects of various sizes and light intensities at
various places in his/her visual field. The department is
equipped with the state-of-the-art Octopus Perimeter 101
that accurately detects damage to sensory visual pathways.
