| Asian
Hospital and Medical Center
to conduct diabetes symposium
Today, more and more people are being diagnosed with diabetes, a
chronic disorder characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose,
or sugar. In a Department of Health report, an estimated 3.36 million
Filipinos are now affected with this disease, making it the ninth
leading cause of death in the Philippines. An alarming fact is that
this number is expected to rise to about 8 million in less than
20 years.
What’s
more disturbing is that many Filipinos are still unaware that they
have diabetes. To raise public awareness of this prevalent disease,
the Asian Hospital and Medical Center will hold a symposium dubbed
“Diabetes Updates: Current and Novel Approaches to Therapy”
on March 8, 2007, 5 p.m., at the Fourth Floor Training Room of the
hospital.
Medical
practitioners are invited to attend the symposium, which will address
the need to manage diabetes more effectively through the latest
in research and advanced treatment. Dr. Joy Arabelle C. Fontanilla,
a consultant at the Section of Endocrinology of the Department of
Internal Medicine of UP-PGH will discuss the latest concepts in
diabetes management and treatment. The symposium will also be graced
by medical experts from Asian Hospital in the fields of cardiology,
nephrology, and neurosciences.
The
symposium, which is in collaboration with the Consultant Alumni
of the UPCM Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity and the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority,
is free of charge. For registration, call Asian Hospital and Medical
Center at 771-9000 to 02 local 8066 or 8073.
