Diagnostic
Services
The
Heart Station, also known as the Non-Invasive Cardiac Laboratory,
provides several interrelated non-invasive diagnostic tests
and procedures. These tests provide important findings,
which become the basis for effective treatment of patients
with cardiovascular disease.
The Heart
Station offers the following services:
Electrocardiogram
(ECG)
ECG is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity
of the heart. The Heart Station provides ECG services 24
hours daily.
Echocardiography
Echocardiography is a procedure that evaluates the structure
and function of the heart through sound waves recorded on
an electronic sensor that produce a moving picture of the
heart and heart valves.
Transesophageal
Echocardiography (TEE)
TEE is a test that allows your doctor to record ultrasound
images of your heart from inside your esophagus (the muscular
tube that connects the throat and stomach). Since the esophagus
lies just behind the heart, TEE may produce clearer pictures
of the heart's movement than would standard echocardiography
taken from outside the chest.
Holter
Monitoring
A Holter monitor is a portable ECG recorder that a patient
wears during normal daily activities (including sleeping).
Electrodes are placed on the skin of the chest, and its
wires are attached to a tiny box worn as a belt or shoulder
strap. The Holter Monitor continuously records and stores
the electrical impulses. The patient must list his/her activities
during the day, as well as any symptoms (e.g. palpitations,
rapid heartbeats, any episode of dizziness or faintness).
Upon completion of the Holter monitoring, a medical technician
plays the tape on a special computer to look for any abnormalities
of the heart’s rhythm. A cardiologist then interprets
the results.
